URALIAR statement

Blue Fields of Glory

“Anyone who sees and paints a sky green and fields blue ought to be sterilized.”
— Adolf Hitler (German Chancellor, leader of the Nazi party, 1889-1945)

My current show URALIAR is influenced by “degenerate” art whether it was created by the degenerates coined by Hitler or the postmodern artists is the 70s and early 80s. This period of art is under “attack” by many who do not consider Modern/Conceptual or “Postmodern” art to be art. The images and words that confront you in the URALIAR show refer to our being the target of lies in all aspects of life, love and war.

“The Cabinet of Dr. Erwin” kept in mind the Entartete Kunst exhibit mounted by the Nazis in Munich in 1937. I was interested in creating the look of the Cabinet of Dr. Calligari’s sets as my art would have been seen as degenerate by the ultimate liar (Hitler) whose quote above is challenged in every way within the URALIAR show. This quote led to the inclusion of the landscape paintings. The other paintings are influenced by Godard’s styling in French cinema as the radical color and feel of his movies portray the subtle truth between the reality and myth of love and connect with the abstract nature of color that Hitler despised. Hitler was of course quite a good painter in the realistic style that he felt was the only art that was NOT degenerate.
