My fifth grade helpers drew simple curved or jagged lines on pieces of paper for me for the drawing club after school. These helpers do so much for me. They clean, organize, make me laugh. They are a gift from the art gods.

A great idea! It’s amazing how each student will interpert the single line.
My guess is that these 5th grade students receive so much from being around you and your art environment. You are fulfilling some of their needs, and in return, they are eager to help you. Children intuitively recognize a healthy environment. It is wonderful that you are there for them.
I do try to create an environment of trust. I am a very transparent person, although not invisible, who wants students to feel that they can take creative risks, as well as have an understanding that if they need to talk they will not be judged. Many just need an ear or a person to be silly with. Thanks for the feedback and pass the website along to anyone who may be interested… Always looking for feedback, lessons, other educators/artists experience and/or thoughts on philosophies, etc. Peace.

You know how I feel about Rita. Everything she told me (even the things I disagreed with) I utilize somehow now. She was a great cooperating teacher.
Rita Gravino taught me this trick while student teaching at Scribner Road Elementary School in Penfield, New York…
